November 25th: NECK, Six.Point.Five, Red Star Rebels
This was easily one of the most diverse gigs I've been to this year starting with old school rock (Red Star Rebels), through ska funk (Six.Point.Five), right down to Irish folk punk (Neck)
The Red Star Rebels. Wow, Guns and Roses meets a member of The Darkness and you’ve pretty much got it. Self described as “In it for the kicks”, the Rebels are PURE rock. Sleaze rock, with a splash of glamour and plenty of laughs, they know exactly how to work the audience and they did so with the skill of a professional.
Another band that knows how to work the Pitz crowd are Six.Point.Five, Milton Keynes veterans. With new member Euan firmly in their line up, the reception was electric with chants of “Euan.Point.Five” still ringing. Playing a mix of old and new material, the point-fivers trod their line carefully pleasing all sides of their greatly-ranging audience. Where there’s Six.Point.Five there’s always a large crowd, all of whom were definitely enjoying the show.
Headlining act Neck were in one word. OIRISH. To be honest, TheBootsGirl didn’t understand a word of what frontman Leeson O'Keeffe said at the beginning. But I don’t think anyone else did either. Quote a random guy who said to TheBootsGirl “I DON’T KNOW WHAT HE’S SAYING BUT IT GOT TO BE COOL! He’s IRISH!”
Playing what they call 'Psycho-Ceilídh', the Celtic punk sound is something you don’t encounter often – it’s refreshing. And it was nice to see large amounts of people “jiggin it up” but then again it’s hard to not want to move to music like this. Similarities? It reminded me slightly of Togmor, but more.. Irish…
A varied night but strangely enough, similarities between the bands come to mind. They’re all at the forefront of their respective scenes. The passion for their music shows in their performances. And best of all? They all do it damn well.
4.5/5
